中国的传统文化中，蝙蝠是好运和幸福的象征。人们用五只蝙蝠代表“五福”，祝福别人“五福（蝠）临门”。那“五福”是什么呢？“五福”出自《书经》的《洪范》：“五福：一曰寿，二曰富，三曰康宁，四曰攸好德，五曰考终命”。
第一福是“长寿”，第二福是“富贵”，第三福是“康宁”，
第四福是“好德”，第五福是“善终”。
“长寿”是命不夭折而且福寿绵长
“富贵”是钱财富足而且地位尊贵。
“康宁”是身体健康而且心灵安宁。
“好德”是生性仁善而且宽厚宁静。
“善终”是年岁已尽而且安详离世。
五福合起来才能构成幸福美满的人生，一分开可就不美妙了。有的人长命百岁而贫贱度日，有的人富贵而健康情况不佳，有的人满足于过贫贱悠闲的生活，有的人富贵长命而最后却遭横祸不得好死。人生境遇多得不胜枚举，只有五福全部临门才是十全十美的，其余的各种情况都是美中不足，是有缺陷的福。
五福当中，最基本、最重要的是第四福——“好德”。有着生性仁善、宽厚宁静的德，这是最好的福。因为德是福的根本，福是德的体现，有敦厚纯洁的“好德”，才能使其它四福使之不断增长，从而“五福临门”。
